Cherub - Item #654

Cherub - Item #654

27 Inches High x 10 Inches Wide x 19 Inches Deep

Andrea del Verrocchio (1435-1488) is one of the most famous sculptors and painters of the Italian Renaissance. He created this wonderful cupid sculpture during the early Renaissance in clay. The clay was never baked, yet the statue miraculously has survived intact for over 500 years. It is thought that the piece, known as Putto Poised on a Globe, may have been a model for a fountain figure due to the outstretched arm and the formation of the lips and cheeks, ready to expel water. The statue is also recognized for the complexity of the figure's posture, which was rare for the early Renaissance. The original piece is in the Andrew W. Mellon Collection at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
